Why we named the company Sevah.
A founder note on the Sanskrit word sevā, what it means precisely, and the discipline a name like this enforces on the product.
The company is named after the Sanskrit word sevā (सेवा). It means selfless service — care given attentively, without expectation of return. It is not charity, which presumes a giver above and a recipient below. Sevā is closer to the recognition that caring for another person is not separate from caring for yourself.
I considered the obvious names. Something with robotics in it. Something with care and a suffix. Each one felt accurate and small. Robotics describes the hardware, not the reason the hardware exists. Care on its own has been worn thin by a decade of brochures.
What the word actually means.
Sevā is specific. It is attentive presence — noticing what someone needs before they have to ask, and doing the small thing well. It is not transactional. The moment you start counting what is owed in return, the word stops applying. That precision is the part I wanted on the logo.
I am wary of romanticizing any of this. Sevā is not a mystical concept. It is a working idea inside a long philosophical tradition, and the people I learned it from would be the first to say it is a practice, not a feeling. You either do the work or you don't.
The discipline a name enforces.
Naming the company this way puts a quiet question on every design review. Does the thing we are about to ship embody what the word means? If a feature is built to impress a buyer rather than to serve a resident at 3am, it fails the test. If a notification is loud where it should be calm, it fails the test.
The product implication is concrete. Companion's response latency target is set by what a resident in distress can tolerate, not by what looks good in a demo. That is the kind of decision the name is supposed to force.
